Alice Chance recorded three generations of women for this emotive “mother-daughter motet”

In this interview with CutCommon, Alice tells us more about her new work Heirloom: an electroacoustic ‘mother-daughter motet’, featuring the voices of fifteen women from five different families.

Drawing from the Blue Mountains, the Torres Strait, the Philippines, France and Iran, the women sing and share stories of the treasured keepsakes, traditions and memories handed down from mother to daughter: a jewellery box, a collection of songs, a prayer.

Drawing musical inspiration from Monteverdi’s Vespers and Gavin Bryars’ Jesus’ Blood, the voices slowly phase in and out of synchronisation with each other, reflecting the complex and constantly evolving ties between mothers and daughters throughout their lifetimes.

Join us on Friday 25 August at Melbourne Recital Centre for the world premiere of Heirloom.
